Welcome to Downtown LaGrange, where history comes alive in its iconic landmarks – the Troup County Courthouse, the McLellan Building, Mansour’s Department Store and the Kress Building. From the courthouse’s architectural grandeur to McLellan’s resilient spirit and the Kress Building’s vibrant charm, each structure tells a unique story of LaGrange’s past.

1930s: Troup County Courthouse

Let’s begin our journey in the 1930s, a decade marked by resilience and determination. The Troup County Courthouse, erected in 1904, stands proudly as a testament to LaGrange’s unwavering commitment to progress and justice. Designed by architect Andrew J. Bryan, its elegance echoes that of the Monroe County Courthouse in Monroeville, AL. Albert Lehmann, Jr. meticulously tended the courthouse clock, installed in 1904 and readjusted it in 1930.

The courthouse faced a tragic fire on November 5, 1936, during which Nurse Ruby Williams and one of her patients perished, prompting Dr. Silas C. Rutland to heroically toss county health records from an upper window. Despite this adversity, the community rallied to save most records, preserving LaGrange’s history for future generations.

1940s: McLellan Building

Transitioning into the 1940s, we encounter the McLellan Building – a symbol of community spirit. Originally the site of the J.A. Bradfield House, it was torn down in 1913 for the Kress Building and the Callaway Department Store. Rebuilt between 1923-24 after the Callaway Department Store building burned in 1923, the McLellan Building became home to McLellan’s 5-and-Dime, a nostalgic establishment that offered solace and comfort to the townsfolk during the tumult of World War II.

Operating from 1924 to around 1975, the building witnessed the evolving landscape of Downtown LaGrange, adapting to the changing times while remaining a steadfast pillar of the community. Its transformation into the McLellan Parlor now pays homage as a beloved part of Del’Avant Event Center.

1950s: A Decade of Change

In the 1950s, LaGrange underwent a profound transformation as America emerged from the shadows of World War II. The post-war era introduced newfound prosperity, leading to economic growth and suburban expansion. Families sought refuge in the burgeoning communities surrounding LaGrange, yet amidst new development, Downtown LaGrange remained a beacon of tradition and community.

1960s: The Kress Building & Mansour’s Department Store

During the dynamic 1960s, a surge of cultural evolution and progress swept through America, casting its influence upon Downtown LaGrange. Standing proudly amidst this wave of change was the Kress Building, an architectural gem built in 1913. Born from the ashes of the J.A. Bradfield House, its construction by Pike Brothers Lumber Company ushered in a new chapter of the town’s history. Across the passing decades, the Kress Building retained its position as a vital hub of Downtown LaGrange, adapting to the shifting tides of retail and commerce. Despite the closure of Kress in the 1970s and the subsequent evolution of its spaces, its enduring legacy lives on within Del’Avant Event Center today.

Delavant-Event-Center-Rooftop-Visit-LaGrange

Established in 1917, Mansour’s Department Store quickly became renowned for its commitment to offering top-quality retail products. What started as one small store in the early 1900s steadily grew into an entire block of bustling business, thriving in the 1960s under the visionary leadership of Nasor Mansour I and his family. Not only did the store provide exceptional merchandise, but it also cultivated a profound sense of community among its patrons, greeting them by name and fostering a strong sense of belonging. In an era marked by rapid industrialization and changing consumer habits, Mansour’s stood as a steadfast symbol of tradition, quality and reliability. Today, as the Courtyard by Marriott stands on the site, Mansour’s legacy of exceptional retail experiences seamlessly blends with modern hospitality, bridging the past with contemporary comforts in the vibrant tapestry of LaGrange’s history.

As we explore these historic sites, we’re transported through time, unraveling the layers of LaGrange’s past. Each landmark serves as a window into the town’s rich heritage, inviting us to continue celebrating the captivating history of Downtown LaGrange while honoring the resilience and spirit of generations who have called it home.

He is the recipient of the Vandalia Award, West Virginia’s highest folk honor.

JOSH GOFORTH:

Josh grew up in Madison County, North Carolina surrounded by the music and stories of his ancestors. He is a highly accomplished storyteller and old-time, bluegrass, and swing musician playing close to 20 instruments. Highland Pines Marina also provides facilities for launching your boat safely. Before setting sail, ensure you have all the necessary safety equipment on board and familiarize yourself with state and local boating regulations.

Need to rent a boat? Highland Pines Marina has you covered, along with boat repair, fuel and supplies to keep your boat running smoothly, and you can purchase bait on-site for your fishing excursion. For boat rentals, take your pick from pontoons, fishing boats and kayaks.

Embrace Outdoor Adventures at West Point Lake

The first glimpse of West Point Lake is always scenic. Picture focused fishermen; kayakers and paddle boarders; boats followed by tubes and kneeboards! The well-kept shorelines protect over forty square miles of calm waters and dozens of creeks. Teeming with life, the terrain makes West Point Lake one of the Southeast’s most sought-after fishing retreats for anglers. Every year, thousands of fishermen travel to West Point Lake on an expedition to capture catfish, stripers, bream—but most notably, largemouth bass and crappie. The 26,000-acre reservoir is home to notable populations of both, with lots of state-record and trophy fish in its history!

Among its fishing amenities, West Point Lake provides numerous docks, public piers and bank fishing opportunities. Check out our Guide to West Point Lake Fishing for more details, including information on working with local fishing guides! Guides know the ins-and-outs of the lake, helping visitors uncover the lake’s fishing spot secrets.

West Point Lake is known around the Southeast for much more than its fishing opportunities. Enthusiasts, professionals, beginners and hobbyists hit the lake year-round to kayak and canoe the calm, open waters. Bring your own gear or rent from Highland Pines Marina and prepare to explore!

Discover Nature’s Beauty on the Trail

Past the open water, filled with boats, birds and aquatic life, lives a forest alive with wildlife, vegetation, and miles of trails to explore. Try to catch a glimpse of the lake’s numerous osprey or vibrant flora, and take a minute or two to smell the honeysuckle. You may even see a family of deer grazing about the land—all tucked away along the trails of West Point Lake!

west-point-lake-trail-featured-day-1500x750-visit-lagrange

Surrounding the lake’s vast shoreline are countless hiking trails and opportunities. Below are some of the most popular!

Lakeside Trail (6.4 Miles; Difficulty Level Moderate)

Lakeside Trail is a multi-trail loop that weaves through West Point Lake’s surrounding forest and along its shoreline. The loop covers over eleven miles of terrain with densely-wooded stints of trail juxtaposed by panoramic lakeside scenes. Well-marked, the trail is used by beginner, intermediate and advanced hikers, as well as many mountain bikers! The main trailhead for Lakeside Trails is located in R. Shaefer Heard Campground.

The entire loop, without side quests down other trails, generally takes a little over two hours to complete; however, plenty of bailout points are marked along the way for shorter treks. Dogs on a leash are permitted!

West Point Lakeside Loop (0.9 Miles; Difficulty Level Easy)

West Point Lakeside Loop is a great trail for beginner hikers, birdwatchers, or just a casual lakeside hike! Depending on your pace, the hike averages around twenty minutes from start to finish, and takes place openly alongside the lake, however secluded areas and fishing stops pop up along the way. The terrain is mostly flat with only a 75 foot elevation, which makes glancing around for birdwatching and wildlife spotting much safer and easier!

Osprey in flight over West Point Lake.

West Point Lakeside Loop is a side-trail off West Point Lakeside Trails. The trailhead is located near a parking lot with adequate free parking. Dogs are allowed, but must remain on a leash!

Pyne Road Park Trails

Recently regraded and marked, the trails at Pyne Road Park are unique because of the various ways to explore them! Designed specifically for mountain biking and equestrian, hikers also flock to the trails at Pyne Road Park for the beauty and serenity of the area. More nature trails are planned for the upcoming Oakfuskee Conservation Center, located on the other side of Roanoke Road.

Bonus Tip: A great resource for hikers is AllTrails! Check it out for basic trail information as well as photos, conditions and reviews from other hikers! TrailForks is a great resource for mountain biking, and those interested can also find various Facebook groups and organizations dedicated to the sport who can offer more insights.

Highland-Pines-Resort-Visit-LaGrange

The less-rugged lodging options at Highland Pines include cottages, cabins and chalets. The spacious chalets feature an open-layout with vaulted ceilings, an inviting southern porch and spellbinding views of West Point Lake. Cabins and cottages, perfect for slightly smaller parties, feature a kitchenette, grill and all the amenities you’d expect from a hotel, only cozier!

Additionally, Highland Pines supplies docking and refill stations, an on-the-lake dining experience, one-stop lake shop, a fully-accessible sand beach, forest trails and more.

Short-term Rental Homes

One of the best ways to unwind lakeside, and certainly one of the easiest ways to find serenity, is by renting a lake house for the family to enjoy. There are a few notable short-term rental homes available on the water, some of which even come with private docking! The spacious homes that line the waters edge are often perfectly placed for a sunset view, and some are even stocked with extra goodies for a weekend out on the water. Our team has found a few of these homes, but there are more to discover on platforms like Airbnb and VRBO.

West Point Lake Parks

The beautiful ecosystem of West Point Lake can also serve as an excellent place to rest your head. Pitch your tent or park the RV at one of the many parks around the lake, and take in the sights and sounds of nature. Whitetail Ridge, Holiday, Pyne Road and R. Shaefer Heard parks all feature overnight camping and spectacular views of the lake.

Only an hour south of Atlanta, West Point Lake is a refreshing escape from the daily hustle and bustle of life. Sunbathe on the shorelines, roast s’mores over the campfire, or spend the day kayaking and fishing on the water before cozying up beneath the stars. Reset and unwind, take inspiration from nature’s beauty and create memories to last a lifetime.

Black Violin

Sweetland Amphitheatre

Gates Open: 6:30 PM | Show Starts: 8:00 PM
black-violin-sweetland-amphitheatre-visit-lagrange

Black Violin is an American hip hop duo from Fort Lauderdale, Florida comprising two classically trained string instrumentalists, Kevin Sylvester and Wilner Baptiste, who go by the stage names Kev Marcus and Wil B. Kev Marcus plays the violin, and Wil B. plays the viola. Classically trained by day, they faithfully put on their headphones and listened to the hottest rap records each night. They went to different colleges—Marcus attended Florida International University and Wil B went to Florida State—but then reconvened, moved into an apartment together, and started trying to produce other musicians.

Black Violin’s work extends far beyond the stage, reaching deep into urban communities with numerous free performances for students and hands-on engagement with youth symphonies and community centers. Through the TurnAround Arts program, Wil and Kev connect with more than 100,000 students throughout the year, mostly at low-income and Title 1 schools, and adopted Bethune Elementary, in Florida’s Broward County (near where they grew up) to initiate an ongoing mentorship program.

Wil says that Black Violin isn’t always explicit with its message, but that they don’t have to be—that the creation of an audience that is multi-generational, ethnically and economically diverse, is a powerful statement of its own. “The stereotypes are always there, embedded so deep in our culture,” he says. “Just by nature of our existence—the Idea that these black guys who could be football or basketball players are playing the violin—we challenge those ideas. It’s a unique thing that brings people together who aren’t usually in the same room, and in the current climate, it’s good to bring people together.”

Blues Traveler w/ The Robert Randolph Band

Sweetland Amphitheatre

Gates Open: 6:30 PM | Show Starts: 8:00 PM
blues-traveler-sweetland-amphitheatre-visit-lagrange

In 1987 the four original members of Blues Traveler—John Popper, Chandler Kinchla, Brendan Hill, and the late Bobby Sheehan—gathered in their drummer’s parent’s basement in Princeton, NJ to jam. From these high school sessions emerged a band that would go on to release 14 studio albums and counting, four of which have gone gold, three platinum, and one six-times platinum- selling more than 10 million combined units worldwide. Over an illustrious career Blues Traveler has played over 2,000 live shows in front of more than 30 million people, and, in “Run-Around,” had the longest-charting radio single in Billboard history, which earned them a Grammy® for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. Their movie credits include Blues Brothers 2000, Kingpin, Wildflowers and others. A television favorite, they have been featured on Saturday Night Live, Austin City Limits, VH1’s Behind the Music and they have the record for the most appearances of any artist on The Late Show with David Letterman. Blues Traveler’s latest effort, 2021’s Traveler’s Blues, is nominated for a Grammy in the category of “Best Traditional Blues Album,” bringing their 35-year journey full circle.

A virtuoso on the pedal steel guitar, Robert Randolph jumped from spiritual to secular music and found an audience among blues fans, roots rock aficionados, and jam band followers with his fiery, passionate instrumental work and heartfelt music. While Randolph cut his teeth playing in services at the House of God Church in his native New Jersey (a domination where the pedal steel is a key part of the musical program), his talents were discovered by fans outside the church, and he made his debut with a live album recorded with his backing group the Family Band, 2001’s Live at the Wetlands, that mixed gospel and full-bodied rock and blues. Randolph’s first studio set, 2003’s Unclassified, broadened the scope of his repertoire with flashes of funk and Caribbean sounds. His subsequent albums with the Family Band, such as 2010’s When We Walk This Road (produced by T-Bone Burnett) and 2013’s Lickety Split, were steeped in passion and energy that came from their heartfelt fusion of multiple genres.

Saturday, May 6

10 AM – 4 PM

History lives in LaGrange! Experience life as a Roman soldier at Biblical History Center’s Roman Army Day. Witness the power of the Roman Empire and join us on Saturday, May 6th for a day of living history, featuring authentic reenactors, live animals, and more. The Biblical History Center helps people encounter the ancient Biblical world through its history and culture. Through authentic archaeological replicas, Biblical meal presentations, daily life artifacts in the Biblical Life Artifacts Gallery, lectures and events like Roman Army Day, ancient Middle Eastern life comes back to life.

The presence of the Roman Army is an important part of culture from Biblical times, especially during Jesus’ life on earth. Roman soldiers are mentioned multiple times throughout scripture, including these examples:

  • The Centurion, Matthew 8 – A Roman soldier comes to Jesus to ask him to heal his servant. He mentions his place of authority and the soldiers under him.
  • The Roman Soldiers at the Crucifixion, John 19 – This passage describes the presence and actions of Roman soldiers before, during and after the crucifixion.
  • Roman Soldiers at the Tomb, Matthew 28 – The elders and chief priests paid Roman soldiers to spread false news that the disciples stole Jesus’s body after the resurrection.
  • Paul and the Roman Soldiers, Acts – Paul has several accounts of interactions with Roman soldiers throughout the book of Acts, giving examples of their power during Biblical times.

The Biblical History Center has decided to make this year’s edition of Roman Army Day even more family-friendly, in hopes the event will be both fun for the whole family and so parents are able to also fully enjoy the experience. The Roman Army Day festivities will kick-off at 10 AM and last until 4 PM, with a full-slate of activities for the whole day.

There will be face painting for the little ones, food truck vendors, Middle Eastern dance performances, interactive Ancient Roman style Mock Trials, and Roman performance pieces. Throughout the day there will be Roman soldiers out and about, able to answer any questions you may have about their culture and lifestyle. According to Carlos Cantu, Executive Director of the Biblical History Center, this day really “brings the [replica] garden to life”.

If you want to add another layer of authenticity to your experience, consider also planning to participate in one of the Center’s Biblical Meals as part of your day. The meals are four-courses, led by a guide who will explain ancient meal customs in a 1st century dining room.

A Romantic Dinner for Two

We recommend making a reservation at Venucci or Mare Sol for dinner. Grab a drink beforehand and stroll over to eat. Mare Sol is a casual and fun environment with great views of downtown and a menu that locals rave about. Venucci features upscale classic Italian fare, perfect for a special occasion and for the pasta-lover in your life.

Just want to jump to dessert? Then we recommend a pit-stop at Cafe Brûlée, where dessert should never be skipped, or enjoy a night cap at the Beacon Lounge, a cozy new bar attached to Beacon, and share a slice of chocolate pie and a cocktail.

Bring on some Old-School Romance

Nothing says romance like a picnic. Pack a picnic for your honey and take them to the Callaway Memorial Tower. Built in 1929, the stunning tower is surrounded by a large green lawn and just might be the most romantic spot in LaGrange. Bring a pack of cards or a frisbee and enjoy the great outdoors together.

Keep the romance alive and finish your date at Nutwood Winery sipping on locally-made wines and strolling through the vineyard. Try one of their tasting options to sample several types of the wines together. The winery is picture-perfect and nestled among Georgia pines.

Date Night Movie on the Square

Sometimes the very best date means keeping it simple. When was the last time you were treated to a good old-fashioned movie date? Lucky for you LaGrange has one of the best, the “AMC Classic LaGrange 10”, located in a primetime spot on the Square. Look up the showtimes, grab a bucket of popcorn and get lost in the big screen.

If the night is still young after the movie and you didn’t fill up too much on popcorn, keep the date going for a sweet treat and coffee at Cafe Brûlée or walk over to the new ice cream shop in town, Scoops!

Looking for an Active Date Night?

Sitting still not your thing? No problem. We have a few ideas up our sleeve. For the adrenaline junkie we suggest planning an outing to Chop House Axe Throwing on the Square. Just the right amount of thrill, Chop House Axe Throwing can add a little adventure to your next date night. The location is within walking distance of some of the best shops and eateries in town, so take the time to also enjoy a walk around town.

If axe throwing seems a little intimidating, take a spin at Sweetland On Ice before it closes for the season on February 14th, 2023! Every year Sweetland Amphitheatre transforms into a skating rink for the winter season and offers concessions like hot cocoa and coffee. For $15 per person, you can rent a pair of skates and take on the ice together.

Pure-Life-Studios

Music for Two

LaGrange is a great spot for music lovers, and there are several options to catch a live show. One of the best spots in town is Pure Life House of Music, a renovated warehouse turned music venue. Check out their schedule which is regularly packed with performers ranging from blues guitarists to singer-songwriters. Pure Life is brown bag approved, so bring a bottle of wine to share and enjoy a live show together.

Planning a Sunday date night? Beacon has live music every Sunday from 4-7 pm. Get there early and enjoy Sunday brunch and drink a local beer before listening to local musicians do their thing.

Sometimes small town charm is much more romantic than the big city. Soak up the charm of LaGrange and plan something special for you and your loved one! Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, take a hint from us and use our tips to plan a date to remember.
